Whats a steam roller11/3/2023 Not only was the structure of the poem tailored to be flattened by a steam roller, the contents was that of a description of a man who crushed things that were beautiful by overanalyzing them and he was also unable to appreciate the simple things. Marianne Moore description of this man whom she used to love is one that resembles a steam roller. However, even if it was possible it would be for not because she is already bitter towards him. In Moore’s third stanza she says “As for butterflies, I can hardly conceive”/ “of one’s attending upon you, but to question”/ “the congruence of the complement is vain, if it exists.” I believe she uses butterflies to act as a metaphor for something beautiful, which she basically says that she can’t believe anything beautiful would be associated with the man. The second stanza starts off by stating “Sparkling chips of rock”/ “are crushed down to the level of the parent block.” By this she means that these jewels, or precious things that have been done or said, are crushed or devalued by the way this man just acts like a steam roller and destroys the meaning by his inability to appreciate the simple beautiful things. His steam roller-like behavior is repulsive to Moore and she further insults him by saying he is half-witted. You crush all the particles down”/”into close conformity, and then walk back and forth on them.” This man tends to overanalyze things, and by this he destroys its meaning. In lines three and four, Moore states “You lack half-wit. My guess is that she got her heart broken by a man she cared for, and she uses this poem to vent about the character (or the lack of) of her ex-lover. The first thing that came to my mind after reading this poem was that Marianne must have been a pretty bitter person, the tone she carries throughout this poem is intense and cold. The inclined shape the lines put together seems as if they were strategically placed to be squashed by a steam roller, and the placement of the title “To a Steam Roller” makes it seems as if these stanzas were given to this steam roller as a gift to be flattened. It seems as if the lines are constructed at an incline, with the first line in the stanza being the shortest in length to the last line in the stanza to being the longest. The poem consists of three stanzas with four lines each. It does not store any personal data.“To a Steam Roller” by Marianne Moore has an interesting structure.
